October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual nation-wide campaign to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer and the importance of screenings. Power in Pink-Iron County makes this a local effort through various activities raising money for local women going through the challenges of breast cancer and treatment.
“In October, we wear pink,” said Power in Pink board member Deena Marchal, “Especially at SUU’s football game on October 8 at 6 p.m. against Tarleton State. Between the third and fourth quarters of the game, SUU cheerleaders, donned in pink, will encourage support of local women and local breast cancer survivors will be recognized. We express deep gratitude to SUU Athletics for their support.”
The 10th annual Power in Pink Walk and 5K will take place on Saturday, October 22 at 8:30 a.m. West Canyon Park, 151 South 400 East in Cedar City. Registration is available at PowerinPink-Ironcounty.com or through EventBrite. Early bird pricing of $25 per person is available through October 10, after which the price will be $35. Registration the day of the event begins at 8 a.m. All participants will receive a swag bag with a 10th anniversary shirt and medallion. A number of individual and team prizes will also be awarded including the “SUU Superstar” traveling trophy for the SUU department or group with the most participants. SUU Nursing currently holds the trophy.

According to the CDC, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, regardless of race or ethnicity. About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12.4%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Ten years ago, four young survivors started the Power in Pink Walk & 5K to keep precious resources in our community rather than funding national organizations.
